Help...I need your advice to finish my Master Bedroom
I really have no desire to do a house tour on my blog since my house really isn't spectacular (I love it because it is comfy) but my last post kind of lends itself to showing you our bedroom. So I thought I might as well for those of you who are interested and for those of you who have advice to help me in my quest for a ceiling light/fan and curtains.
Here are the before photos from when we bought the house. What do you think of the wallpaper and trim on the top of the wall? I assume at some point they had matching bedding too :) :
Here are the after photos ..still with no curtains (please give me some advice!):
I was not very smart buying a 100% cotton white duvet for our massive king size bed. Just think about it, white duvet, 2 kids, 1 dog...spells disaster. I am always struggling to keep it white with the dark lines staying dark! Plus I feel like I need to iron and starch it and the pillows so they aren't full of wrinkles. My husband would chime in right now and point our that I don't iron...so there will always be wrinkles :)
This little nook leads to the master bathroom and walk in closet (I can never show you that!).
What we see when we walk up the stairs.
As mentioned, I still have some items that I would love to do/replace in here. Curtains for one and the overhead light. It currently looks like an upside down mushroom. I debate a ceiling fan or a chandelier.. I hate the look of a ceiling fan but I love the practicality of them. we have hot summers and I love a fan. But we also have cold winters and hate to have a fan that is off. My debate will rage on.
So does anyone have any curtain advice? I was thinking of putting one rod the entire way across all the windows and putting panels in between each window. Maybe drop cloth curtains or a deep brown. I have to keep some sort of blind for privacy and I do love how bright the white wood blinds make the room. I just can't decide. HELP :)
I hope everyone has a great day.
Stephanie

Is it just me or are our bedrooms the hardest room in the house to decorate?! I just did a post asking for advice about my bedroom also (although mine is about a third of the size of yours and nowhere near as glamorous!). Your bedroom truly is lovely and all you would need is curtains to finish it off. The bed and the pictures above it are gorgeous. But from one hopeless-indecisive-bedroom-decorator to another, I dare not give you any advice! I trust that whatever you do though will be stunning :)
ReplyDeleteI love what you've done already! Someone had some advice about wrinkles...spray with a mixture of fabric softener adn water and let dry...no wrinkles. I too want a white duvet, but I would have the same problems with trying to keep clean. Try looking on www.houzz.com for ideas. I'm not really good with curtain advice.
ReplyDeletei cant remember where i found this pic...somebody's cool blog, anyways i just LOVE this pic and i did something like it in my own living room...it would look totally cool in your bedroom. good luck and it looks wonderful!

I love your bedroom! Where did you get the art over your bed? Love it!
ReplyDeleteCurtains: I would bring in something with a little color since your room is fairly neutral. Patterns are fun but stripes can bring in some interest without being too crazy. If you want to keep out the light, make sure to get lined/insulated!
For the ceiling fan/chandelier debate, I love chandeliers BUT I love having a ceiling fan in my bedroom! I would suggest the fan we have, it's very contemporary:
Harbor Breeze 52" Aero Bronze Ceiling Fan (search on the Lowes website)
Good luck!
I thnk you did a fabulous job so far with your MB! I think what the windows need are a little pattern in the curtain panel. Maybe an updated floral or a geometric? Look around and you will see tons of options. I am also a BIG fan of rattan blinds..they add so much texture and warmth. I think treating the 2 smaller windows as one using these options would look great. I would keep the bay window separate using the same treatment style. Take a peek over at my post on my blog about cutain treatments--there are some great inspiration photos in that post too. Good luck! POST:http://housefinally.blogspot.com/2010/10/im-so-excited.html
ReplyDeleteYour bedroom is so big!! You did a lovely work whith him, i'm shure you'll find a good solutions for the courtains. Love your bed!
ReplyDeleteIf i are you, i'll put a great chandelier.

I love layering my window treatments - I have a bamboo {outdoor shade} in my master bedroom with side panels that also close up so I have double the darkness :) It's definitely something you'll have to be super creative about if you want to save money! I'd show you pictures...but I haven't posted mine yet! You'll come up with something creative, I bet!!

LOVE LOVE LOVE what you have going on! Love the view from the stairs! Love the sitting area and can still see TV from bed! Love the nook! Love the art over the bed! You go girl! What if you put a fan over the bed and a chandie over the sitting area!?!? For curtains, find a print you like and use thumb tacks to play with height/positioning. I would probably put rods over each window by the bed and then one over the bay area so you don't have a wall of curtains! It would be cool if you could have a rod over each window in the bay. I'll be checking back to see what you decided!
ReplyDeleteI love the wall color, and the navy and white color scheme. Ever thought about finding a duvet cover with texture? Like a box pattern? I have a flat sheet set that I bought at Linens and Things, before the store closures, that I lOVE because the checkerboard/box pattern averts the eye from wrinkles. I have a Coverlet with the same checkerboard type stitching (think all the same color, not black and white checks) that does the same thing. So on that note, maybe look for a coverlet in Navy or Tan, then leave the duvet kinda ruffled up on the bed, like a magazine picture. I recommend referencing PotteryBarn to see what I mean.
ReplyDeleteAs for the curtains, if individually finished, Navy upholtered window valances, with a white roman shade, maybe with a navy border along the sides to coordinate with the pattern on the duvet. If you want to address the windows as a whole, I would keep the mini blinds, build a long valance box, still in navy, then hang a double or triple track window unit. I'd start with a textured white sheer, then for track 2 use a heavy weight & solar lined white panel with the same striping as your duvet, then use track 3 for a decorative Navy panel that remains pulled back, and open. The idea may seem a bit traditional, but it's the fabrics that can make it feel as current or trendy as you would like. I highly recommend going to Lowes or Home Depot and buying their window covering books. I bought one 8 years ago and have never regretted it. I am a Navy wife and curtains are always a chore to figure out with each move my family makes. Good Luck and I can't wait to see what you decide to do.
Just thought of another idea, where you can hang three panels along the wall closest to your bed, essentially hiding the section a wall between the two windows, fooling the eye, and making the room appear brighter, as if a larger window where on display, you could do this with the same ideas I mentioned earlier, or a simple chunky black rod with "o" rings and grommeted heavy weight navy panels, once again heavily lined or with a solar lining.
ReplyDeleteI tripped on your blog today... which is way after the conversation... so forgive me if you've passed this point. But I would switch the reading nook and the bench. Take a look at this example from Pinterest. http://pinterest.com/pin/50032245829925182/
ReplyDeleteWell if i were you i would first make a lighter feature wall or paint all walls but one white then i would change the bed linen to a light bright colour like green or that really nice blue. I would also take out those plants it makes the room look to artificial. also put black and white pictures of yourself or children in. A long home made wind seat white would also be nice. also a really bright light.
ReplyDeleteI usually do not leave a ton of remarks, but i did a few searching and wound up here "Help...I need your advice to finish my Master Bedroom".
ReplyDeleteAnd I do have 2 questions for you if you tend not to mind.
Could it be just me or does it look like some
