DIY Scented Effusion Oil - Easy Gifts on a Budget (Part 4)

I have had and loved my Lampe Berger for many years(although I always spell it wrong and put a 't' at the end..even on my label). In fact, I love it so much I have two of them. One is pretty and sits on my shelf as decoration (I do use it) and the other is plain but get used very frequently. Both have different scents in them so I don't have to change the scents.
If you have not heard of a Lampe Berger, perhaps you know it as a fragrance lamp, effusion lamp or catalytic lamp. It doesn't matter what yours is called, if you have used one you know it is the best way to clean smells out of your house. In fact the reason I purchased my first one was that someone burnt something in my previous house so badly it was filled with smoke. We were about to put our house on the market to sell it, so I had to find a way to remove the smell and fast. After a lot of research and glowing reviews for them, I purchased my first Lampe Berger.

Well now everyone in my family now has one and I thought I might be able to add this to my Christmas spa baskets. In case you are new to this series, here is my running list of spa related items I making (and sharing with you):
I found a few different recipes to make your own oils for a very reasonable price and ended up using this one from Christy's Thrifty Decorating. Lampe Berger oils are very pricey and a small bottle will run around $25. Note that Lampe Berger states you should only use their oils within their candles. Similar to my wax cubes I posted, it is up to you if you are willing to void a warranty to save money by making your own scents.

So to go along with my spa basket, I made a few different scents for the oils. I made a Lavender (of course), a Fir scent to burn during Christmas time and an Orange scent. I am a huge fan of anything scented orange but I don't find it really strong enough in this recipe. I did love the Fir version.

 Materials:

  • 16 oz or 473ml of Isopropyl alcohol (91% or higher)
  • 1 tablespoon Essential oil
  • 1 tablespoon distilled water

Method:

Remove 2 tablespoons of alcohol from the jar.You can purchase this from Walmart, drug stores, etc for usually under $2.

If you are making a few of these, save the alcohol and you can make a small batch with all the 2tbsp. This is to make room in the bottle for the 2 tablespoons of liquid you will be adding. So if there is a lot of room at the top of the bottle, you don't have to do this.

Add 1 tablespoon of distilled water and 1 tablespoon of the essential oil scent you want the the bottle of Isopropyl alcohol.

That is it! It really is that easy.

If you want to decorate the bottle, remember to be careful about covering over the warning labels. I decided to cover mine but I did not secure it so it can easily be removed after it is given as a gift.

I added this to my growing stash of home made spa items.
The spa gift items are starting to really look nice. I worried it would not be enough, do you know what I mean...I just hoped it wouldn't look like a few items thrown into a basket. But I am really feeling happy with this theme and loving the cost!

Up next, Lavender linen water!

Stephanie

(Makes finding needed items much easier!) I've been searching for a way to make my own Lamp Berger oil and you have given me not only that how-to, but lots of other great ideas as well. I've saved you in my fav's and will definitely visit again. Thank you! (Gonna go check around your blog now and see if there's a 'subscribe' option :)

  25. Hi again,
I was wondering why water needs to be added? I will follow your recipe, (including the water), but I was just wondering why, considering such it's such a small amount. I'm sure there's some scientific/chemical reason but I hated chemistry & science in high school - ugh. Boo-oo-ring! Also, I have 91% alcohol on hand, but noticed you used 99%. (I see your recipe calls for 91% or higher). Will 91 work as well as 99? It's certainly not an expensive ingredient, so if 99% has a better 'burn' I'll get some, but if you've tried it with 91% and you can tell no real difference between 91 vs 99 I'll just use what I have on hand. By the way, I was searching on amazon the other day and you can purchase the Lamp Berger-style wicks, (with the little clay doo-dad thingamajig on the top where you light it), for about 13.00. The vessel opportunities are endless to make a custom lamp! You could use any kind of bottle/jar that has a suitable size opening ... a jelly-jar, (you'd just have to make a hole in the lid big enough for the 'business part' of the wick), small fancy vases/bottles, small liquor bottles that have an interesting look, (I'm not much of a drinker, but there are some pretty cool bottles, and I don't know about the liquor store in your area but the LCBO here in Ontario has oodles of small, interesting looking bottles at the front of the store near the checkout. (Not the teeny bottles like you get on an airplane, they're bigger than that -maybe twice to three times the size. I was purchasing some wine about a month ago and saw one small bottle shaped like a glass skull!) Heck, even a beer bottle for a guy, scented with spicy or outdoor-sy essential oils, any e.o. or e.o. blend that smells masculine would work. (If one chooses to use a liquor bottle, and if one isn't a drinker, vodka would be a good choice because it can be used to make perfume, (custom diy perfume is super-simple), or I think I saw a recipe of yours that called for vodka - lavender linen spray, or room spray I think? (I'm making that as well, along with your other lavender recipes, like the bath salts, sugar scrub and I'm also going to make a lavender lotion bar, maybe a nice Eau du toilette/body spray, a couple lavender soy candles and some lavender soap to go with it all, because I have oodles of soap & candle-making supplies in my craft/diy stash. Hah - stash! 'Stash' sounds so ... small. My craft/diy "collection of supplies", then :-) It's getting out of control, actually. I have no doubt that there are MANY others out there who can relate. I, sadly, not have the luxury of a craft-room. :::big sad sigh here::: (And I have _serious_ crafters-envy for those that do. 'Specially the really organized, everything-has-a-place craft rooms that always look so neat and tidy. That is simply not normal.) Most, well, ALL, of my crafting happens in the kitchen, ('cept for the heavy-duty, involving-power-tools-stuff, which happens outside or in the garage), and my myriad of crafting stuff is stored all around the house in plastic totes and boxes, filling closet shelves and floors, the laundry room & the garage.

Anyhooo ... I'm rambling big-time. Thanks again, love your blog!!!

PS: (I have a super easy-peasy lotion bar recipe (and how-to's for a couple of lotions, perfumes {liquid and solid}, and these really cool bath-melty thingies - if you're interested in any of these just let me know.) I subscribed for updates on your home page so you should have my email address.

Sorry my message is so long

  26. I have seen this formula everywhere, yet no matter which essential oil or fragrance we use, we just can't get the strong scent you get with the brand name Lampe Beger oil. We can barely smell it, using the tablespoon/10 drops per 16 oz of 91% alcohol, even we use more. What's the trick???

  44. I am making lamps out of some beautiful, tall, colored glass jars, along with a copper coupling at the mouth of the jar to hold a wick (these are fiberglass tiki replacement wicks) and the botton of the jar is filled with white stones. I would like to make my own oil because I am doing a lot of these. i originally saw the project using these as outdoor candles with citronella oil. However these jars are too beautiful to leave outsude here in Wiscosin. My question is about the smoke factor while burning it inside the home. Can I make and use my own scented lamp oils and if so, will they be too smoky? Is there a suggestion how to make these smokeless? I am making the first batch as a houswewarming gift for a brand new house. I would hate for these to leave black soot on their ceilings! Any tips or suggestions are much appreciated. Thank you
